It’s 2015. We know that you know that websites nowadays are kind of a part of being a modern business. So, why am I writing this?

I’m writing this because I think small business owners don’t understand just how freaking amazing websites can be for their business, above and beyond the standard “calling card” site.

I could (and do, much to the chagrin of friends and family at dinner parties) geek out on this topic for a while. But instead I’ll try to keep this short and sweet and limited to things that aren’t talked about as much because we all know that websites make us look more professional, make us seem more approachable, and a website being online is more scalable than taking phone calls all day long – so let’s talk about things you might not know.

Here are 3 reasons you might not have known for why if you haven’t got a website for your small business, you should:

1. Making a website is a sales development goldmine.

This is something that a lot of our clients don’t expect when we start working with them, so let me explain. Developing and keeping up a website is a long term process that continually helps you figure out your whole sales cycle from the basics of articulating the value you provide, all the way to learning how to speak to your audience, to solidifying your brand. This has ramifications that stretch far past the website itself, and into how you run your business as a whole.

2. Your customers/clients are becoming hermits.

Some of the companies I’ve worked with have been met with this battle cry from me: “If your client/customer isn’t going to buy from you because you don’t have a website, it means they were never going to buy from you in the first place.” I’m not going back on this here, because it’s true (not having a website is never the real dealbreaker), but I do have a caveat to this battle cry. People are becoming more and more hermit like, and because of that there is a growing preference for asynchronous communications overall.

Maybe I’m ahead of the curve on this one, but if I can buy something or research something without having to talk to another human being, then I’ll make a beeline for that option almost every time. Add to that the rise in almost every demographic for how much information one needs before making a purchase, and it just makes sense that having a well-made website that provides that information is a must have.

3. Your competitors aren’t online.

Seriously. Particularly in Canada this is a problem, where about half of small businesses still haven’t taken the leap and gotten a site made. The great thing with that? If you do have one, you’re head and shoulders above your competitors already.
